Development of a stable extrusion foaming process for PLA

Extrusion foaming of PLA on a commercial scale has been studied but not resulted yet in extrusion foaming processes and foams with sufficient properties.

The aim of this project is to develop an extrusion foaming process for poly (lactic acid) (PLA), This novel extrusion foaming process should be stable, industrially viable and scalable. Requirements for the novel PLA extrusion foam is that it has a cell size in the micrometer domain, with a density depending on the final application (but preferably under 100 kg.m-3).
