Heat stress in pigs around transportation: request for data for risk assessment

The Office for Risk Assessment (BuRO) of the Netherlands Food and Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is currently working on a risk assessment of animal welfare during the transportation of finishing pigs (60-120 kg) and broilers to the slaughterhouse when temperatures are (extremely) high. NVWA would like to substantiate the data-analysis with more data from other member states to validate their findings.

The NVWA base their risk assessment on e.g. current literature, EFSA reports and are using internally (within the NVWA) available data to perform the exposure assessment. The main focus is on correlating a rise in DOA (dead on arrival) and the temperature/humidity of the external environment (not in the truck).

Request for data

For substantiating the data-analysis with more data, NVWA has the following request:

  • Do you have data available on the DOA of finishing pigs (and/or broilers) in the period May to September from the year 2017 and/or 2018 and/or 2019?

Preferably this data can be filtered per day and includes the total number of animals transported and slaughtered on each day. Also, if possible, to separate the DOA from the animals that die while waiting at the slaughterhouse (after) leaving the truck.

In case you have datasets available and are willing to share them, NVWA suggests making specific arrangements about data ownership.
